The following are just one way to tackle how to play Runescape, from dad's point of view.

Firstly, if you have not already seen the site, and do not know what it is about, here is the link:

The idea is to roam around an imaginary cyberspace peopled with characters representing real human players, a multiplayer online role playing fantasy game.
There are Goblins, dwarfs, a frog princess, Minotaurs. Giant Spiders, Scorpions, Rats, Zombies, Ghosts, Skeletons and many other mythical monsters. Also various computer controlled humans such as the Mugger, Woman, Man, Guard, Jailer, etc.
There are also online humans, wearing various guises, wizards, warriors in knight’s armour, etc.
The difference is that you can “kill” the monsters and computer generated humans anywhere in the game (if you are high enough level not to get killed yourself while doing so), but unless in the WILDERNESS, you are not given the opportunity to kill fellow online gamers.
Beware the Wilderness, you are warned by signs, and a popup comes up to warn you that you are about to leave the protection of the rest of the game, but if you do wander into the Wilderness, you are fair game for other online gamers who are permitted to attack and kill you, and take all your goods and equipment.
If you attack another player unprovoked (in other words, not in self-defence because they attacked you first) then you get labelled with a skull and crossbones above your head for 20 minutes, no matter where in the game you wander (wilderness and the safe areas).
If you die, you get to keep 3 most expensive pieces in your possession, UNLESS you die with this mark over you, when you lose EVERYTHING you carry, armour, weapons, money and goods in your rucksack. Be warned! I forgot this when I was experimenting, and lost a steel sword, steel chain mail body armour and steel platelegs, much to my shock.
Good job I had had the sense to save my expensive and rarer MITHRIL /ADAMANT armour and weapons in the BANK.
Many items are in various strengths, bronze, iron, steel, mithril, adamant, rune. In increasing expense to buy, and strength, hardness or whatever other property is applicable to the object in question.
When starting in the runescape world, as a new player (noobs or newbies some call us), you have to do training before being allowed to move outside the safe training area to the first village, Lumbridge.
There you can find a castle with a bank on the second floor tower area. Get a PIN (acronym for Personal Information Number) as soon as you can, as it takes ages to become active, and you cannot withdraw from your account until it does. This is to stop the many hackers and scammers getting access to your goods saved in the bank, if they hack your account.
One good idea is the many TUTORS in the game, mostly around Lumbridge.
Rather than repeat everything here, visit the link that takes you to the official runescape tutorial.
TUTORS guide
Having given a rudimentary introduction, now for the tips I have accumulated from playing the game for a few weeks as a free member, in order to get some goods and money for my 2 sons.
By the way, you have to be 13 or over to join!
You are allowed several accounts but cannot log into them at the same time, nor “drop” goods from one account to another, that includes trading between your own accounts.
You are not allowed to sell accounts to others, it would seem that IP addresses are tracked, if someone in UK suddenly seems to be playing from Timbuktu (no idea what they may have changed that name to nowadays), then they will suspect foul play.
TIPS
====
1. Increase your weapon bearing levels to a sufficient level to be able to “equip” with mithril or adamant strength weapons. Do this by killing Goblins around the Lumbridge store, where you can sell the items that you pick up from them when they are dead.
2. Increase your axe rating (Woodcraft level) to allow you to chop down Oak (Lumbridge shop gives you 2 gold pieces each) then later Willow (Lumbridge shop pays 4 GP (gold pieces) each) then finally reach level 60 to be allowed to chop down YEW (64 GP for the first log in the shop, then 59, 54, reducing each extra log that is in the shop). That allows you to make money fast enough to afford the expensive Mithril and Adamant weapons and armour, etc.
3. When you can get a BLACK SWORD for example (and my ADAMANT MACE has similar properties) then you can select the SLASH as weapon style (SPIKE with the mace), and this spreads the points you earn when fighting amongst the three ATTACK, STRENGTH and DEFENCE XP simultaneously. Saves balancing out the three types individually and it IS better to be equally balanced between all three for maximum effect.
4. When you have some MITHRIL body armour and helmet, sword and shield, then try the mine in VARROCK where there is an entrance hole you can go down, amongst the mining rocks at the surface. This is the Stronghold of Security, and there you can get a lot of money killing monsters, and just scavenging coins and items (like shields, daggers, helmets) that others leave when killing monsters there. You can either sell them in the shop east of Varrock, or if in trouble, and nearly dying, use the HOME SPELL in the spell book to get back to outside Lumbridge Castle (near enough). Here you can go to the bank and save your goods taken from the Stronghold of Security or go to the shop a little north of it and sell the stuff there.
5. Watch out for special characters that appear at random, ignore some at your peril. Like the wood spirit that attacks you near the pond to the west of Lumbridge Castle. If you are not strong enough to kill it, then run like mad!
Similarly, watch for the ROCK GOLEM in the quarries, I have seen it attack in the MINING SITE south of LUMBRIDGE, the mining site near the FISHING TUTOR, and also in the AL KHARID mining site, so I suppose it can crop
up anywhere that there is a MINING SITE, perhaps. Since it is a high level (about 70 from memory), it takes some killing, I only just did it at my COMBAT LEVEL of 48, with some STRENGTH POTION and eating food to replenish my HITPOINTS, as well as using the PRAYER POINTS
to heal my HITPOINTS and thicken my skin against the blows. Irritatingly enough, after killing it, I did not see any bones, or treasure to collect. All that dangerous work for nothing
{updated 22/3/7}
6. Talking of BONES, if you see any, collect them and bury them as much as you can. That way your PRAYER POINTS will increase, once over 40 level, you get PROTECT FROM MISSILES (protection from "RANGED ATTACKS").
At level 37, you get protection from MAGICAL ATTACKS, level 31 can give you temporary STRENGTH INCREASE of 15%, level 28 gives STEEL SKIN, a temporary 15% increase in DEFENSE.
Note I say temporary, as the PRAYER POINTS count down to zero over a short period of time, so the more functions you select, the faster it runs out of PRAYER POINTS.
7. If you want to get into the Dwarven Mines, safely, go down the stairs in the right hand building at the top of FALADOR. If you go via the area near the WILDERNESS, and get too close to the Black Knights, they may kill you
if you are too low a level and run out of RUN energy, or get stuck somehow.
8. The MONASTERY near the FALADOR town at the edge of the WILDERNESS has monks that can HEAL your injuries. I once got down to one HITPOINT of life left, and
just managed to get to the MONASTERY in time. Note the healing goes in steps of 10, up to your maximum HOTPOINTS level. Thus if you have a HITPOINT score of 48 as
I do at present, while writing this, then it takes 4 requests from a HITPOINT score of 1, to get to 41, then a fifth to get to 48 (not 51, as that exceeds your allowance).
This will be expanded at a later date, as more interesting things are discovered.
One last piece of information, THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS CHEATS FOR RUNESCAPE, hence be wary of any site that offers to sell you any, they MUST be trying
to drop Trojans on you to steal your account details, possibly your credit card details as well! See the main RUNESCAPE site for more on this, it is important you take
security seriously.
